The moment captured here changed the course of Buddhist history.

Crafted in Southeast Asia during the early 20th century, this bronze Buddha represents the moment of enlightenment. His hand reaches toward the earth in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, also known as the Earth Witness gesture. According to Buddhist tradition, it was at this moment that the Buddha called upon the earth to bear witness to the countless acts of virtue that had guided him on his path to awakening.

There is a quiet strength in this figure. The posture is calm, the expression serene, yet the story it tells is one of perseverance, conviction, and transformation. It reminds us that life’s most meaningful achievements are often the result of patience, resilience, and unwavering purpose.

The elongated earlobes, flowing monastic robe, lotus throne, and ushnisha rising from the crown are among the most enduring elements of Buddhist art. Together, they symbolize wisdom, spiritual awakening, and the ability to rise above illusion and distraction.

For generations, images of the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra have been placed in homes, temples, and spaces dedicated to reflection. Their message remains as relevant today as it was a century ago: true transformation begins from within.

The Buddha comes complete on its blackened metal support and with its printed story inside a beautiful envelope.
